Life and godliness

...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. - Philippians 2:12-13

-THIS SUNDAY'S TEXT-

Over the past year I and many others have referred to a wonderful verse found in 2 Peter 1:3, which reads, His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness. As we have become familiar with this verse, this wonderful, faithful provision of our Lord, this Sunday we will look at this verse in its context.

I want to encourage you to read 2 Peter 1:1-21 in preparation for Sunday. As you study the chapter, pay attention to the small prepositional words – through, by. Other phrases to key in on are – so that, for this very reason.

As you read verses 3-4, understand that God is providing in a wonderful way for His people.

God's provision is all that pertains to life and godliness, yet ask these simple questions to deepen your study:

  1. How is God providing? (through, by)
  2. Why is God providing? (so that…)
  3. What are we to do with God’s provision? (For this very reason…)
  4. What are God’s promises following? (verses 8-11)

While working through 2 Peter 1:1-21, Paul’s words to the church of Philippi come to mind. God is at work and He is faithfully providing all we need for life and godliness, yet as followers of Christ, we have a responsibility to live and obey and work out our salvation to the glory of God. Yet, it is God who works in us. Praise the Lord!!!

Philippians 2:12-13 reads, Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

-CONSIDER & MEDITATE- In regard to the promises found in 2 Peter 1,

Is my life fruitful and effective in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ? Am I continually aware and thankful for the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His forgiveness of my sin? Is there evidence of God keeping my life and growing me in holiness? And am I thankful for His faithful work in my life? Do I rejoice and give thanks for God's gracious, merciful provision of eternal through Jesus Christ?

-PRAYER & THANKSGIVING-

Thank God for His faithful, gracious provision in granting to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

Thank God for sending us His Son - Jesus Christ, our all-sufficient Savior and Lord.

Ask God to give you a desire, and wisdom, and strength to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, while at the same time remembering that it is Him (God) works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
