-THIS SUNDAY'S SERMON-

A Terrible Example - "worthless men"

I am truly blessed beyond all measure. I am so thankful to be called a child of God; He has adopted me into His eternal family through the salvation of His Son - Jesus Christ. God has also blessed me in giving me wonderful parents who have loved the Lord and have raised me up in the Lord through much prayer and discipline (this discipline has a few meanings). While it is both a joy and a blessing, it is extremely humbling that Jon (my brother) and I get to serve my parents as their pastors. I was so thankful the other day to be visiting with my parents and hear their excitement about reading through 1 Samuel. Dad said he was enjoying it so much that he read all the way into 2 Samuel.

I pray that you are enjoying our time in 1 Samuel. The Lord has blessed us with the perfect example to fix our eyes on - Jesus. Jesus walked in perfect obedience to the Father and we are blessed to have the gospel accounts and chapters like Isaiah 53 to look to. In the Word, we also have other examples, not of perfect people, but real people who walk (in the grace of God) by faith. I am reminded of Hebrews 11. While we are given some positive examples in Scripture, we also read of many terrible examples. May we be warned by such terrible examples and set our hearts on knowing and following Christ.

Read 1 Samuel 2:11-36

Grab a piece of paper and jot down the differences between Eli's worthless son and Samuel. The passage seems to go back in forth in its focus on the Samuel and Eli's sons.

What made Eli's sons worthless? How was Samuel different from Eli's sons? How serious is God about the character of His leaders and their abiding in the LORD?
