Dangers of a Dull Hearing

By chapter 5 of Hebrews, the author of this letter has warned his initial audience (and us) of many looming dangers. Whether drifting away from the truth (2:1) or the sin of unbelief (3:12), the author of Hebrews has continually directed our attention back to the Person and work of Jesus Christ.

Lord willing, this Sunday we will explore one of the most sobering passages in the New Testament. As Sunday draws near, I want to encourage you to spend some time reading and meditating on Hebrews 5:11-6:12 and spend some time considering the following questions:

Q: In 5:11, the Hebrew author mentions his desire to share even more about the Person and work of Jesus. Yet, there seems to be a dilemma. What is that dilemma?

Q: As the passage continues, how did this "dullness of hearing" negatively impact the Hebrew audience?

Q: According to the Hebrew author, what are some characteristics of a spiritual babe? What about the spiritually mature? (5:11-14)

Q: As chapter 6 begins, what does the Hebrew author desire this initial audience to leave behind? Why do you think this is the case?

Pastoral Plea: Hebrews 6:4-8 is one of the most disputed passages in the New Testament. With that in mind, would you join me in praying for all those who would gather together Sunday morning and for me as I prepare to handle the Word? Ask for the Lord to soften our hearts and to give us the ears to hear.

Q: As you read 6:9-12, what are some things that "belong to salvation"?

I look forward to growing with you Sunday! May we gather with an eager expectancy to hear from the Living God!

In Grace, -Jp
