Memory Verse: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. - Luke 2:11
Sermon Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
-THIS SUNDAY'S SERMON-
God’s providential work through the unexpected
I am always amazed at the faithful work of the Lord our God. I need to confess to you that I do not plan out our church calendar for preaching, and I am always amazed with the Lord and His guiding and providing. This Sunday, we arrive (by God’s design) at 1 Samuel 16 (read 1 Samuel 16:1-13), the anointing of king David. As you read this chapter, notice that Samuel is being sent by God to Bethlehem, as God tells Samuel, “for I have provided for myself a king.” This is 1,000 years before God would bring the King of kings from Bethlehem. Some three hundred years after Samuel goes to Bethlehem, the prophet Micah (Micah 5:2) writes, “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be named among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” Seven hundred years from Micah’s prophecy, the gospel according to Luke (read Luke 2) tells us – “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Rejoice dear people, rejoice! The Lord is so good to us. We are so blessed to live in the day and age in which we do. We get to look back at the Lord’s faithfulness and hear the prophecies of old, that God will send Messiah. We get to look back on God’s faithfulness and see the fulfilled promise of Messiah coming to earth. We get to see Him (Jesus) living and ministering perfectly. We get to look back on the death, resurrection, and ascension of Messiah, Christ Jesus our Lord. And now, with all the faithfulness of God to which we look back on, we look forward to the faithful return of Christ Jesus our Lord. Let us rejoice, for our “hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” May our joy and hope in Christ overflow in praise and adoration of our faithful Lord; may our joy and hope in Christ overflow in obedience to our faithful Lord; may our joy and hope in Christ overflow in our proclamation of the good news of Jesus.
