-THIS SUNDAY'S SERMON-

Introduction to Matthew's Account of the Gospel of Jesus

Dear River Family,

This Sunday we will turn our attention to Matthew's account of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Matthew was one of Jesus' disciples. His name was Levi; he was the tax collector. Matthew (meaning "gift of Yahweh") focuses on Jesus being the fulfillment of the promised king, the promised Messiah from the Old Testament.

The genealogy in the beginning of Matthew, at first sight, to many of us may be found to be boring or possibly unnecessary, but it played a very important role in Matthew showing the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.

Read Matthew 1:1-17

In verse one, can you identify the 3 descriptions of Jesus? Why were these important?

While in the majority of the genealogy, the fathers and sons are mentioned, take note of the four women mentioned in verses 3-6. Do some studying here.

Who were these women? What was their story? Why would Matthew include these women in the genealogy of Jesus Christ?

I am truly looking forward to our journey through Matthew's account of the good news of Jesus. Lord willing - I will see you Sunday!

Grace and Peace,

Eric
