James - Slow to Speak

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger - James 1:19

-THIS SUNDAY'S TEXT-

James – Slow to Speak

Ecclessiastes 5:1-3, 7 reads - Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words.

For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity, but God is the one you must fear.

While Ecclessiastes gives us the framework for Sunday’s sermon, the life of Job will be an example for us to look at as we consider what it means to be slow to speak. Read the first two chapters of Job and the last three chapters of Job.

-Consider and Meditate-

The Book of James is called the Proverbs of the New Testament. While we won’t be reading the following Proverbs, it will be helpful to read and meditate on them this week in preparation for Sunday:

Proverbs 10:19 Proverbs 13:3 Proverbs 17:27-28 Proverbs 21:23 Proverbs 29:20

-PRAYER & THANKSGIVING-

Spend time reflecting on all the blessings we have in Jesus Christ and give thanks. Ephesians 1:3-14 will be a helpful reminder.

Ask God to help The River Family be quick to hear (the Word of God), slow to speak (our opinion and feelings), and slow to get angry.

Ask God to help us be patient people who trust in the faithfulness our mighty God.

Ask God to help us be a praying people.
