One Glorious Night

Advent Reading: What child is this who has been born to us? - Luke 2:1-20

-THIS SUNDAY'S TEXT- One Glorious Night

It started out as a normal night. Just outside of Bethlehem, the shepherds were with the sheep in the fields, settling down for the night. They had spent the day searching for pasture on which to feed and rest from the long day was greatly needed, and the sheep needed to be protected through the night from robbers and wolves. So, resting was off and on.

But something happened, and this night would never be forgotten. Read Luke 2:1-20

This night was awesome, but notice to whom the angel of the Lord appeared. It wasn’t Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor. It wasn’t Quirinius the one governing Syria. It wasn’t Herod the Great the Roman puppet king of Judea.

Of all people, it was the shepherds. Why the shepherds? Why would they be the spectators of this glorious night? Why would they be the first to hear of the good news of great joy that will be for all the people? Why would they be the ones to have a front row seat for the angels’ glorious worship of God?
