Unfit King. 11/21/21

Weekly Catechism Question: What does God require in the first, second, and third commandments?

Answer: First, that we know God as the only true God. Second, that we avoid all idolatry. Third, that we treat God's name with fear and reverence.

Scripture: It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by His name you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you.

Deuteronomy 6:13-14

Sermon Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 15:29 (For He is not a man, that He should have regret.)

-THIS SUNDAY'S SERMON-

Read 1 Samuel 13, 14, and 15. I know - 3 chapters, but they are exciting, action packed chapters. As you read, try to picture in your mind what is taking place. Try to picture in your mind 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen and troops numbered like the sand of the seashore. Think about Jonathan and his armor-bearer climbing up and whipping the Philistine garrison. Ponder the interactions between Samuel and Saul.

Saul was an unfit king for God's people. He refused to abide in the LORD:

Chapter 13 - driven by fear he offered an unlawful offering. Chapter 14 - Driven by pride he made an untimely vow. Chapter 15 - Driven by fear he boasted in an unfinished work.

Compare Saul to Jesus our forever abiding King:

Jesus is the perfect, righteous sacrifice! Jesus is the timely promise! Jesus declared - "It is finished!!!"
