Why has the church stopped talking about sin? 1/14/24

Weekly Memory Verse: "For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." - Romans 8:13

Sermon Scripture Reading: Hebrews 2:18, Hebrews 4:15-16

-THIS SUNDAY'S SERMON-

River Family,

For some reason, the church, therefore Christians, have long avoided addressing sin, the offensiveness of sin, the severity of sin. Why? Many have said because we want to focus on God and His love. I get that, and the truth is, we do need to focus on God and His love. But I really believe that the true reason we have avoided the topic of sin is because we love ourselves, we love our sin, and we find it extremely undoing and offensive when we and our relationship with sin gets pushed on.

Therefore, when we begin to address sin, a few things can happen and I want to encourage us to push through these possible barriers:

Some isolate; we move away from Jesus, the Word, and His people. Some try to cover up sin refusing to seek prayer, accountability, and help. Some defend, rationalize, blame others, or make excuses for our sin.

Over the next few weeks, Lord willing, we are going to slow down and focus on the loving words of Jesus as He warns us about the severity of sin and how sin is overcome in our lives.

I am looking forward to our time together in the Lord Jesus.

Grace and Peace, Eric
